Cooling Systems to Rearing Sheds

Introduction

Conducting silkworm rearing under hygienic environment at set temperature & humidity prescribed for different silkworm larval stages determines the successful harvest of crop. Fluctuations in Temperature and Humidity will affect the Silkworm larval growth there by the silkworm larvae become susceptible to diseases. Though utmost care is being taken by the farmers in the Silkworm rearing sheds, the internal rearing environment is always depended on the external temperature and humidity factors. Especially in summer and rainy seasons maintenance of required temperature and humidity will be a great task to the farmers.
In view of the above, a pilot project was taken up in E.Godavari district arranging turbo ventilators with exhaust fans / sprinkler devices above the roof of the rearing shed with foggers inside the shed through which temperature and humidity was controlled to the required levels and there by harvesting quality Bivoltine cocoons with increased yield of 10 to 15 kgs per 100 DFLs. With this success, the scheme is now being implemented under State Development Schemes with a unit cost of Rs.0.50 lakhs for SC & ST farmers with 90% assistance.
